How to Build Your Own Transistor Radio

    Construction

    • 1). Cut out a small bit of wood, about 8 in. wide and 6 in. long, then sand the edges lightly.

    • 2). Mount the ground and aerial binding posts to the wood with a small wood screw.

    • 3). Bend the flat piece of aluminum that comes with the loopstick in the center to form an L bracket. Face the leg with the large hole to the left and fasten the base leg with two wood screws. Mount the coil by putting the threaded shaft end through the large hole from the right, keeping the two soldering lugs parallel to the baseboard. Tighten one of the small black knobs onto the threaded shaft.

    • 4). Mount the tuning capacitor with no. 4 wood screws in each corner, making sure that the lugs are facing the loopstick. Keep the capacitor raised about 1/4 in. above the surface of the baseboard.

    • 5). Fasten the two small L brackets with small wood screws, then secure the earphone jack to these with 2x56 screws and nuts.

    Wiring

    • 1). Cut a piece of the no. 20 wire to a small length, then trim about 1/4 in. of the insulation off each end. Bend the ends to form small hooks that fit the holes in the soldering lugs.

    • 2). Solder a small bit of wire at the upper leg of the tuning capacitor; at the aerial lug; at the upper then the lower lugs of the earphone jack; and at the lugs on the board.

    • 3). Solder at the points where the two insulated wires meet: at the ground lug, at the upper and lower legs of the loopstick, and the plus terminal of the battery holder.

    • 4). Cut the leads of the 1N48 diode to lengths of 1/2 in. and bend each lead down at right angles. Solder the lead from the unmarked, larger end of the diode, and with the lead from the lower lug of the loopstick, solder it to the lower lug of the tuning capacitor.

    • 5). Cut one wire of the 220,000-ohm resistor to 1 1/4 in. and bend it at a right angle a 1/2 in. from the body. Solder this lead and the free lead from the .02 capacitor to a free lug.

    Installation of transistor

    • 1). Form a loop at the end of each lead of the transistor, then catch them under them the three nearest screws.

    • 2). Unscrew the cap of the earphone plug, then pass the phone cord through it and solder the ends of the cord to the pins of the plug. Replace the cap when done.

    • 3). Add the batteries into the battery holder.

    • 4). Since a set this small requires an aerial, attach the set to a wire hanging out the window, strung from a window to a fence or tree, or spread around the edges of the room. Just make sure that the aerial is 25 to 50 ft of no. 18 wire.

    • 5). Clip the transistor to a metal object, such as a water pipe or radiator.
