Arts & Crafts With Sand Dollars

    Nightlight

    • Purchase an inexpensive nightlight from a craft store. Remove the plastic shade that comes with the nightlight. Using epoxy glue, attach the flattest surface of the sand dollar onto the plastic shade. Wait until the nightlight is completely dry before plugging it into an electrical socket for use. Sand dollars can be crafted into nightlights while in their natural state or decorated by painting beforehand.

    Jewelry

    • Sand dollars add a creative flair when making jewelry. If the sand dollar does not have a hole in it, glue jewelry bails onto the sand dollar. Thread the chain or cord through the bail for an easy sand dollar necklace. Earrings are crafted by simply attaching posts with glue or a small hole can be drilled into the sand dollar. Thread jump rings through the hole and attach earring wires.

    Christmas Ornaments

    • Display your sand dollar during the holidays by attaching a string and hanging it on your Christmas tree. Sand dollars can be hung in their natural white state or decorate them by painting with Christmas scenes such as a Christmas tree or a stocking. Glitter paint adds a sparkle to the ornaments as will tiny rhinestone-like jewels.

    Considerations

    • Make sure sand dollars are clean before using them for any type of art or craft activity. If found on the beach, soak sand dollars in a mixture of 50 percent water and 50 percent bleach for sanitary purposes. Remember sand dollars are fragile and will break easily if handled roughly. It's best to harden them beforehand by brushing with an equal mixture of white glue and water.
