How to Add Wood Trim Between a Carpet & a Concrete Floor

    • 1). Look at the seam where the two floors meet. If they sit evenly, measure the depth and width of the space between them. If they don't sit evenly, measure the width between them and the depth from the subfloor to the top of the concrete floor surface.

    • 2). Compare the wood trim options when it comes to the two flooring types. Since carpet has give, WoodFloorsOnline.com recommends a reducer trim, which helps smooth the transition between concrete and carpet surfaces of differing heights. But a T-molding or threshold trim can also work well if the concrete and carpet sit at roughly equal heights. Use the measurements that you took of the flooring seam to buy a trim of the proper depth and width to meet the floors.

    • 3). Cut away the edge of the carpeting with a utility knife if the carpet and concrete butt fully up against each other to make space for the wood trim to be inserted between the two flooring types. Create a space at least 1¼-inch in width, though you can be more specific with the cut by measuring the width of the base piece of the wood trim you select.

    • 4). Measure the width of the doorway or the seam where the carpet and concrete meet. Use a circular saw or a hand saw to cut the trim down to that width.

    • 5). Slide the base piece of the trim down between the carpet and concrete so the face of the trim sits on top of the floor. Generally, when using trim between concrete and carpet, the longer side of the wood trim should sit on the concrete and touch the carpet, except in the case of a T-shaped trim, which should be centered over the carpet and concrete.

    • 6). Lift the trim back out of the floor seam and apply a concrete adhesive to the side of the flooring that goes over the concrete. Press the trim back into place. Alternatively, secure the trim to the floor using concrete nails every 2 to 3 inches.
