How to Plant Musa Bulbs

    • 1). Choose an area in your yard that receives full sun with no less than 30 percent shade. If necessary, break up the ground by tilling the area. Mix in a sandy loam soil and compost. Plant in May or soon after the last frost.

    • 2). Dig a hole twice the size of the bulb (more commonly known as a corm). Set the bulb in the hole; be sure the bulb is below the surface of the ground by a couple of inches. Cover the bulb and firm over. If planting more than one bulb, space the bulbs 10 to 12 feet apart.

    • 3). Water well after planting to moisten the soil. Do not let the water pool; this could cause the bulb to rot. Water daily to keep soil moist. Do not let it dry out, but do not over water.

    • 4). Apply fertilize after planting, and water in well. Fertilize every two to three weeks while the plant is getting established. After that, fertilize a couple times a year, once in the spring and again in the fall.

    • 5). Cut back the plant in late fall or winter. Cut out any dead areas. Don't be afraid to cut way back, as this plant is hardy and grows back quickly in the spring. Apply a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch during the winter to help it during the cold months.
