Stark Brothers' Apple Varieties
- James Hart Stark settled on the western banks of the Mississippi River in 1816 after leaving his Hutchison, Kentucky, homestead. Stark brought along some apple scions from his family's orchard, which were used to grow a nursery business and start the Stark Brothers' Nurseries and Orchards Company.
- Enterprise apple trees produce a crisp, firm apple with a mild tartness and spicy aroma. These trees are resistant to blight, cedar apple rust and apple scab. Enterprise apples ripen in mid-October and keep well in the refrigerator for five to six months. Enterprise apple trees need a pollinator. The best trees for pollination are the gala, Starkrimson, golden delicious and Starkspur. The USDA Hardiness Zones recommended are Zones 4 through 7.
- Starkspur Red Rome Beauty apple trees mature two to three years after planting. The apple has a tart flavor and is Starks' best apple for baking. Red Rome Beauty apples can be used for cobblers, crisps, tarts and pies or eaten right from the tree. Spur-type trees such as the Red Rome Beauty has shiny red fruit that is ready for harvest in mid-October. It is recommended USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 8.
- Starkrimson Red Delicious apple trees are winter-hardy trees that produce 4 inch in diameter, bright red apples. Red delicious apples have a sweet, juicy flavor with firm texture. The trees are recommended for USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 8 and are ready to harvest in Zone 5 in late September. Pollinators to use with the Starkrimson Red Delicious apple trees are the Stark Jon-A-Red Jonathon, Starkspur Red Rome Beauty and the Starkspur Golden Delicious.
- Stark Lodi apple trees are recommended for USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 8. These trees are early to ripen and their harvest times start in early July. The green-skinned, tangy, crisp apple is eaten right from the tree or used for making applesauce and pies. Stark Lodi apple tree pollinators are the Cortland, Stark BraeStar and Starkspur UltraMac.
