How to Sew a Fabric Storage Basket
- 1). Lay out your outer fabric and cut a rectangle measuring 7 1/4 inches by 9 1/2 inches.
- 2). Cut a strip from the same fabric measuring 6 1/2 inches by 33 inches.
- 3). Lay out your inner fabric and cut two strips 1 3/4 inches wide, across the width of the fabric, roughly 45 inches.
- 4). Cut a rectangle from the same fabric measuring 7 1/2 inches by 9 1/2 inches, and a strip 6 1/2 inches by 33 inches.
- 5). Cut out your cardboard in the following measurements: one piece should be 6 1/2 inches by 8 1/2 inches, two pieces should be 6 inches by 8 3/4 inches, and four pieces should be 6 inches by 3 1/4 inches.
- 1). Lay the inner and outer fabric pieces measuring 6 1/2 inches by 33 inches on the work surface and fold them in half, with right sides together, so that the 6 1/2-inch sides are together.
- 2). Sew along the 6 1/2-inch side on each piece.
- 3). Turn them right-side out and iron flat.
- 4). Put the inner piece of fabric inside the outer piece of fabric with wrong sides together. Make sure to match the seams.
- 5). Stitch around the loop of fabric on one side with a 1/2-inch seam. Stitch along the previously sewn and lined-up seam, catching both fabrics.
- 6). Stitch more seams vertically on the fabric loop, measuring 9 inches, 3 1/2, 3 1/2, 9, 3 1/2 and 3 1/2 more inches from the original seam. These will form pockets.
- 1). Pin the 7 1/2-inch-by-9 1/2-inch outer fabric to the walls you just created. The right side of the bottom should meet the outer fabric of the wall. Make sure you line up the long sides of the walls with the long sides of the bottom.
- 2). Stitch them together with a 1/2-inch seam. Trim the seam allowance.
- 3). Trim one of the 1 3/4-inch strips you cut in Section 1, Step 3, so that it now measures 1 3/4 by 34 inches.
- 4). Fold it in half lengthwise with the right side on the outside. Press, then unfold.
- 5). Fold the two edges in to meet the original fold. Press.
- 6). Repeat with the other strip.
- 7). Pin one of the binding strips onto the box bottom.
- 8). Sew the binding on with a 1/4-inch seam. Overlap and fold under the end of the binding for a clean look.
- 1). Slide the cardboard pieces into the pockets between the seams that you sewed in Section 2, Step 6.
- 2). Put your leather needle onto your sewing machine.
- 3). Pin the top binding strip to the top of the box. Make sure that the cardboard edges are inside the binding.
- 4). Sew a 1/4-inch seam from the binding edge. Be sure to overlap and fold the end of the binding as you did for the bottom of the box to ensure a clean look.
- 1). Lay your 7 1/2-inch-by-9-1/2-inch inner fabric on the table, wrong side up.
- 2). Place your 6 1/2-inch-by-8 1/2-inch piece of cardboard in the middle of the fabric.
- 3). Fold the edge of the fabric over the cardboard and iron to keep it in place.
- 4). Sew the fabric near the raw edges of the fabric.
- 5). Place the fabric-covered cardboard into the box, fabric-side up.
