How To Buy a Craigslist Car
- 1). Know your spending limit. Using Craigslist, you can select to only see vehicles in a certain price range (example: $500 to $1,200 or $2,500 to $3,000). This can help an individual shift through all the listings and only look at the one's that pertain to his or her price range. Just because a car or truck may be a little out of your price range, doesn't mean you need to turn away from it. Set your price rang to 100-200 more than you intend to spend, to account for haggling.
- 2). Watch for mechanical problems. Many people with listings will say that the car runs great, but the transmission is slipping, or it needs to have the gaskets replaced. This is usually a big problem and will require at least a grand to get the vehicle in reliable shape. Unless your a mechanic, or know how to deal with the problem, steer clear of anything with something too major wrong with it.
- 3). Know what would be a good price for a vehicle. Use Kelley Blue Book to find the suggested value on a car. This site is not 100 percent accurate, but should give you a good idea on what would be a descent price. Don't take it too close to heart though, if a seller is asking a few hundred more -- use your own judgment.
- 4). Know what to ask. Always be sure to ask for the mileage, as a high mileage can be a sign that the vehicle will not last long. Asking if the title is clear is necessary to be sure there is no lien on the car. And one last note, be sure to ask if there is any mechanical problems with a car, never just go out and buy the car before checking it out yourself or with a mechanic.
