How to Change Riding Lawn Mower Belts
- 1). Roll the mower onto a flat surface.
- 2). Pull the spark plug from the engine to prevent the mower from starting.
- 3). Clean the dirt and debris from the top of the deck belt with an air hose or a soft bristled brush.
- 4). Lower the deck to the lowest position using the deck control handle.
- 5). Remove the bolts from the belt guard. Pull the deck guard off.
- 6). Unscrew the bolt holding the belt keeper rod around the belt pulley.
- 7). Loosen the bolts on the idler pulleys, but do not remove. This loosens the belts. Note the routing of the belts by drawing a diagram or taking a picture. This prevents routing the belts incorrectly.
- 8). Remove the belt from all the pulleys. Do not touch the tension spring.
- 9). Route the new belt around the pulleys in the same orientation. Tighten the pulley nuts. Reattach the belt guard. Re-install the spark plug.
