How to Mix Mortar for a 100 Year Old Brick Wall
- 1). Move a wheelbarrow next to the old brick wall where you intend to apply the new mortar.
- 2). Fill the bucket of the wheelbarrow with washed sand and Portland cement in a 3:1 ratio. For example, if you add 30 lb. of sand, you need to add 10 lb. of cement.
- 3). Slowly add water to the bucket in small spurts. Stir the mixture thoroughly with a shovel after adding each amount of water until the mortar has the consistency of a buttercream frosting. Once mixed, apply the mortar immediately to the bricks.
