How to Plant Apple Seeds in a Pot
- 1). Place 2 or 3 inches of gravel or broken ceramic pots in the bottom of the plant pot.
- 2). Mix about three parts potting compost to one part perlite or sand and fill the pot. Apples are hardy and tolerate various soils, but good drainage is essential.
- 3). Clean and sow several apple pips about 1 inch deep and 3 to 4 inches apart in the compost. It is best to plant them in the fall. Alternatively, put the seeds in a plastic container with some potting compost. Put the container in the fridge for a couple of months before planting, to mimic winter conditions.
- 4). Place the pot on a saucer in a sheltered, outside location until spring. Remove any weeds as they sprout up.
- 5). Water the soil occasionally. It doesn't need to be permanently wet, but don't let it become bone dry.
- 6). Let the baby apple trees grow to a few inches high before removing the smallest ones, leaving the largest and strongest one to continue growing in the pot. Pot the smaller ones into new pots, if you want some spare trees.
- 7). Transplant the tree into the ground when it outgrows the pot.
