    Full Sun

    • The shore juniper Juniperus conferta thrives in full sun and well-drained, sandy soil. An evergreen, this shrub is hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zones 6 to 9. Shore junipers grow to 2 feet tall but spread up to 5 feet. The shore juniper has finely textured, bright-green needles. The black chokecherry Prunus virginiana var. melanocarpa, a deciduous shrub, grows from 3 to 5 feet tall with an equal spread. Black chokecherries bloom with white flowers in spring, followed by black fruits. The shrub's shiny, deep-green leaves turn red in fall. Plant it in full sun and well-drained soil in U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zones 3 to 8.

    Light Shade

    • The warty barberry Berberis verruculosa, a slow-growing evergreen, reaches heights from 3 to 6 feet with a slightly narrower spread. This compact, rounded shrub has fine, dark-green foliage that turns purple to dark red in winter. Hardy in USDA zones 5 to 7, warty barberry grows in light shade and a range of soil types. The dwarf sasanqua Camellia sasanqua is hardy in zones 7 to 9 and prefers rich, acidic, well-drained soil. This fast-grower reaches heights to 4 feet tall with a narrower spread. Sasanquas bloom with white, red or pink fall flowers and have shiny, evergreen foliage.

    Partial Shade

    • The privet honeysuckle Lonicera pileata, a spreading evergreen, grows to 3 feet tall and 5 feet wide. This finely textured shrub blooms with white to yellow flowers in summer and has glossy, dark-green foliage. Privet honeysuckle thrives in USDA zones 6 to 8 and moist, well-drained soil. The Bailey compact American cranberry bush Viburnum trilobum "Bailey Compact" thrives in partial shade and requires well-drained soil. This dense shrub grows from 3 to 5 feet tall and produces long-lasting red berries. The American cranberry bush is hardy in zones 2 to 7.

    • The doghobble Leucothoe fontanesian prefers full shade and requires moist soil. Hardy in USDA zones 5 to 9, this evergreen grows to 4 feet tall with a 5-foot spread. Doghobble shrubs have shiny, broadleaf foliage and produce white to pink spring blossoms. This plant is highly poisonous. The coralberry Symphoricarpos orbiculatus grows to 3 feet tall and tolerates full shade. This deciduous shrub quickly spreads and produces abundant clusters of pink-and-white berries lasting through winter. Coralberry shrubs are cold hardy to zone 3 and are native to North America.
