How to Build a Tilting Mount for a TV
- 1). Find the holes for the bolts in the back of the TV. Mark out a shape on the sheet metal that will fit over these holes with at least 1 inch between the edge of the shape and holes. Cut this shape out using the saber saw.
- 2). Mark where the bolts from the back of the TV will need to go on the sheet of metal and drill holes just large enough for the appropriate bolts.
- 3). Use the stud finder to locate some studs in your wall where you want to mount the TV. Find two adjacent studs. Mark out and cut a section of metal that will span between these studs. It should be at least as large as the first shape you cut. Mark where the bolts will go through the sheet into the studs and drill. Use at least six bolts.
- 4). Drill holes for the hinges at the bottom edge of each shape. Places the hinges in a closed position between the two sheets and bolt them to the sheets of metal so that the two sheets can open up like a book. The size of hinge you will need will depend on the weight of TV you are using but ask at the hardware store where you by them if they will be sufficient to support your TV.
- 5). Position the hook towards the top of the sheet that will bolt to the TV. Drill holes in the sheet where the holes in the hooks base are. Bolt the hook onto the sheet through the holes.
- 6). Screw the back plate to the studs in the wall using the long screws. Mount a hook in each of the studs above the plate. Bolt the TV to the first plate. Tilt the TV to the desired position and hook the middle of the chain onto the hook in the plate. Run the other ends of the chain up to the hooks mounted in the wall.
