Cat Picture of the Week: Squishy
Sweet rescue story, written with love. I hope Squishy will heal and be adapted to an indoor life. It's really the safest way, even in a rural atmosphere.
About two months ago after a storm we saw a little kitten in our barn under the hay stack. The poor thing was obviously scared and wouldn't come to any of us in the family, so i made it my job to take food and water out to the barn and put it where the kitten would be able to get to it and i did this every day for about two weeks. One night i was putting my other three cats in the garage for bed when i heard a very pathetic sounding meow coming from behind our freezer.
The kitten had made his way into our garage and was now scared to death. We decided to put some food into a cat carrier and try to catch the kitten so we could take him to the shelter.
We put some food into the carrier and sure enough he went in and started eating his heart out. When we caught him he was not so happy, but after a couple days in our bathroom and all of us going in and spending time with him he calmed down and turned into quite a little lover. I called a couple of shelters around our house but one said they wouldn’t take him because we were out of county and the other was over crowded and said it would be best to find him a home rather than take him to the shelter. I was getting quite attached to the little boy, and I decided to name him Squishy. (Got that name from Finding Nemo)
Well Squishy was getting used to the house and I decided to take him outside for a bit and let him sniff around. I did this for a few days and then after he figured out the window screen was a kitty entrance and exit I let him go outside by himself for a while.
BIG MISTAKE. Squishy got up in the engine of my dad's jeep and we didn't know it. My dad went to take my sister somewhere and started the engine, not knowing Squishy was in there. He got quite lucky however, only suffered a broken leg and a couple cuts to his stomach. He will have to wear a cast for about six weeks and the vet says his leg may never heal correctly because the break is so close to the joint, without surgery he may always have a limp, but that he will live and have a wonderful life even so.
Squishy is now about six months old, he is now our only male cat, and he is loving his life here. He gets along with two of our three other cats, and the third at least tolerates him for now. He does get bored sometimes but he will have plenty of time to play after his leg heals up. One thing is for sure, he used up one of his nine lives. I am SO glad they have nine :-)
