How to Compost Pallets
- 1). Place the pallet on the ground. Use your saw to cut up the pallets. While a manual saw will work, it's very labor-intensive. An electric or gasoline-powered saw works much quicker. Cut pieces no longer than about 1 foot. The smaller the pieces, the quicker the wood will decay. Be careful, though, as pallets have nails or screws.
- 2). Fill the composting bin about one-quarter full of pallet wood. Add about a gallon each of meatless food scraps and grass clippings. Add in about 2 gallons of soil. Bring the mixture up to the halfway mark with grass clippings. Moisten the mix with water and close the lid. Ohio State University recommends several designs of composting bins. The rotating drum bin, however, is the most efficient. Rotating the drum provides aeration to the decaying matter.
- 3). Turn the bin three or four turns every day. Composting is not an overnight process. It would be beneficial to have three or four bins and stagger the filling so you produce compost on a regular basis.
- 4). Remove the compost when the wood is fully decayed.
