Fun Summer Church Activities for Kids
- An ideal game for large groups of younger children, this game requires them to stand in a circle. Holding one end of a ball of string, you throw the ball to the nearest child. The child then passes the ball on to a close friend, who holds a loop of the string and passes the ball on again. Eventually a web of connections forms to help them visualize their friendships. Illustrate how the web collapses when children let go of the string.
- This activity can vary greatly depending on how much work and detail the organizers want to include. Scavenger hunts involve searching out items and checking them off an assigned list. Participants are divided into teams and given their assignments. Perhaps they can be told to take photographs of various places or items. The hunt can take place in the church yard or can involve a chase all over town with people driving about.
- For this activity, wet a disused bedsheet and hang it on a wall, a fence or over a clothesline. Participants are given paintbrushes with tempera paints, or even sponges and spray bottles. Ask them to draw Bible characters, or scenes that suggest Bible verses. They can play charades or a similar guessing game using the sheet as a renewable mural; the sheet can be easily washed clean with a hose.
- A good game for teenagers; ask them all to bring water guns with them and let them cut loose. Make sure you provide water guns for those who might not have brought their own. Divide the kids into teams and create rules such as a "three strikes" rule, and set an optional goal for them such as a flag capture. Afterward, gather them and discuss the theme of spiritual battle, referencing an appropriate Biblical passage.
