How to Keep My Hair From Having Static
- 1). Use wood or rubber combs and natural bristled brushes to comb and brush your hair. Plastic combs and brushes tend to build a static charge more easily.
- 2). Carry a fresh anti-static dryer sheet with you. Lightly rub this over your hair occasionally. It will help keep static away, just as it keeps static from building on clothes in your dryer. Doing this has an extra benefit--your hair will smell fresh all day.
- 3). Wear clothing made from natural fibers that are non-conductive, such as cotton, rather than pure nylon or polyester. According to Science Made Simple, synthetic clothing picks up more static. This means you, including your hair, will also have more static. However, Fowler Associates notes that if you are in a polyester chair, pure cotton clothes against this may produce more static than a blend.
- 4). Use a humidifier in your home to keep air from becoming too dry. This won’t help you when you leave the home, but will help reduce static while you are there.
- 5). Wash your hair with moisturizing shampoos and use conditioners. Keeping your hair from becoming too dry helps keep static away.
- 6). Wear leather-soled shoes to minimize static, as suggested by Fowler Associates. When you walk across a floor, especially carpet, the friction of your shoes helps generate static electricity. Plastic or rubber will generate more static, which means you will be more prone to hair static in addition to painful shocks.
