How to Build a Corner Wall-Mounted Desk
- 1). Use a table saw to cut two 3-foot by 3-foot pieces of 3/4-inch birch plywood for the top of the desk.
- 2). Set the guide on the table saw to a 45-degree angle. Cut the ends of the plywood pieces that will meet in the corner. Make sure to set the saw so it cuts the 45-degree angle facing the correct direction. Some saws require one board to be turned upside down while cutting in order for the two sides to fit together correctly.
- 3). Smooth all of the rough edges of the plywood with a hand sander. Wipe off the sanding dust with a soft rag. Stain and seal the wood. Allow the stain to dry.
- 4). Slide a stud finder along the wall, 36 inches from the floor, and mark the locations of each stud where the desk will be mounted. Secure angle shelf braces to the wall at the stud locations, using a drill and 1 1/2-inch drywall screws. Each side of the desk should have two angle shelf braces.
- 5). Place the prepared pieces of the desktop onto the mounted shelf braces. Position the two halves of the desktop so the corner seam is smooth and fits tightly together. Secure the two halves together by placing 2-inch by 2-inch scrap pieces of your plywood across the seam on the underside of the desk. Secure the plywood pieces to the underside of the desktop with 1-inch wood screws. Place at least three plywood braces along the length of the corner seam.
- 6). Secure the top of the desk and the angle shelf braces with 1/2-inch wood screws driving through the bottom of the brace and into the underside of the desktop. Repeat for all of the installed braces.
- 7). Cut two 3-foot pieces of the 2-inch molding. Cut a 45-degree angle at the ends of the molding that will meet at the corner of the desk. These pieces will finish the appearance of the front of the desk.
- 8). Cut two pieces of 2-inch molding, each 3 feet long, with a 45-degree angle cut at the end of the molding that will be opposite the wall. These pieces will cover the ends of the desk.
- 9). Stain the cut molding pieces and allow to dry. Position the molding along the front of the desk so it is flush with the top of the desk. Attach the molding to the front edges of the desk with finishing nails. For extra security, wood glue can be placed on the front edge of the desk before attaching the molding.
