How to Finish a Bay Window
- 1). Sand the frame and sill of the window with a 100-grit sanding sponge in order to dull the wood surface. The process is intended to smooth out marks, fine scratches and other surface blemishes while removing dirt.
- 2). Dust the wood to remove any sawdust from the window. Wipe it with a tack cloth to pick up any last traces from the surface.
- 3). Stir a can of stain with a wooden stirring stick. Apply a coat to the window frame with a natural-bristle brush, using strokes in the direction of the wood grain. The stain evens out the wood's color and enhances its natural appearance.
- 4). Use a new brush to saturate the wood with a sanding sealer. Wipe the excess with a rag, then allow the sealer to become dry to the touch.
- 5). Sand the surface with a 280-grit sanding sponge in preparation for the finish. Apply a polyurethane varnish to the wood using a painter's rag for even coverage; the protective coating preserves the condition of the window while providing a vibrant, durable finish.
- 6). Allow the first application to dry overnight, then sand it with the 280-grit sponge once more. Treat the wood with a second coat using the same method and repeat for one to two more layers to ensure that the surface is efficiently sealed. Do not sand the top coat.
