How to Tile a Shower Bathroom
- 1). Plan the layout of your tiles and consider any design elements you would like to incorporate into the project. This encompasses the tiles' color, shape, texture and composition. Measure your shower stall, specifically the areas that will be tiled. Purchase the tiles based on these design choices and measurements.
- 2). Prep your shower walls. Lay down about a 1/8- to 1/4-inch layer of mortar on the wall. Place the bottom row of tiles first, slowly filling the wall following your predetermined layout. Use a tile spacer to allow for a small amount of space between each row and column of tiles.
- 3). Cut away part of the tile for tiles that will land on top of an existing shower fixture like a faucet. Install the tiles adjacent to those you will be trimming. Mark spots on the tiles that you need to be cut away. Use tile nippers to carefully break off small bits of tile until you have the correct shape. Press these firmly into place. Allow the mortar behind the tiles to dry for 24 hours before beginning to add grout.
- 4). Apply the grout to the spaces between the tiles to protect the mortar underneath. Give this 24 hours to cure, then coat the grout with grout sealer to prevent water from seeping into the space behind the tile. Let the sealer dry before exposing the shower to water.
