How to Start an 80-HP Mercury Outboard
- 1). Pump the primer bulb five times or until the primer bulb is no longer flaccid. Remove the top cowling by twisting the latch on the back of the motor and tilting the cover forward to release the front of the cover. Visually inspect the entire fuel system around the injectors or carburetor, along the fuel rails or hoses, all connections between hard and soft fuel lines and the line to the fuel tank for leaks, cracks or wear.
- 2). Replace the cowling and shake the motor to ensure the security of the motor on the transom. Ensure that the motor's safety chain is attached to the appropriate fitting on the transom. Look at the propeller, noting damage, including missing or bent blades and cracks.
- 3). Move the steering wheel or the tiller handle, checking for both tight spots and sloppiness. Inspect the steering link rods to ensure that they are connected properly and snugly.
- 4). Insert the key in the ignition switch. Insert the lanyard stop tab in the stop switch slot and fasten the lanyard to yourself. Push the ignition key inward several times to set the choke.
- 5). Turn the ignition key clockwise until the starter motor cranks the engine.
