When to Plant Bee Balm Seeds
- If you already have established bee balm plants, you can save the dried seed heads to plant the following year. Bee balm seeds are usually readily available at local garden stores and nurseries starting in early spring. Bee balm seeds can also be purchased from online seed companies and garden supply retailers.
- The best times to sow bee balm seeds is in the early spring (about two weeks before the last frost date) or late fall. The easiest method of sowing bee balm seeds is to simply scatter the seeds on the ground in the location where you want them, or to scatter them over a flowerpot filled with potting soil. Lightly water the area where you have scattered the seeds then wait. Bee balm generally blooms in June and July but can be deadheaded to produce a late summer display of color.
- Bee balm plants are easy to grow and require little maintenance while adding vibrant color to any garden. Bee balm is best grown in moist, well-drained soil and partly shady to full sun areas (the plants will produce the most blooms in full sun, however). Bee balm grows to be a tall plant (approximately 3 to 4 feet tall), which must be taken into account when choosing a location for this perennial.
- While sowing seeds is an easy way to add this plant to your garden and landscape, other methods of propagation work well with established plants. Bee balm plants are easily propagated through division--which is the most common method of propagation. This is done during the early spring by digging up established plants, dividing the roots and transplanting the bee balm plants to a new location.
Bee balm can also be propagated through cuttings. Dip the end of cuttings into a rooting compound then put it into a moist potting soil mix in a pot. Cover the cutting with a plastic bag and place it in indirect sunlight, then allow nature to work its magic. The cutting should take root in about 3 weeks. - Bee balm is an excellent companion plant for small vegetables--especially tomatoes. Bee balm will attract bee pollinators and will help enhance the growth and flavor of the vegetables it is planted near.
