Middian - Age Eternal
About.com Rating
The doom metal band YOB split in 2005. Guitarist, vocalist and main songwriter Mike Scheidt has formed a new group called Middian. It's much in the vein of YOB, a trio playing sludgy doom/stoner metal, but there are some differences.
There are only 5 songs on Age Eternal, but this is not an EP. Each track is lengthy, with two clocking in at around 15 minutes each. Middian's music is thick and dense with some very intense and heavy riffs.
They also vary their style, speeding up and slowing down and playing clean parts in addition to the fuzzy doom guitar. Pretty acoustic interludes give way to somber and more abrasive melodies. The tempos in general are a little faster than most doom bands.
Scheidt's vocals have a little more variety now than they did in YOB. He has the angry yelling down pat, but also delves much more into melodic vocals. Age Eternal will satisfy fans of YOB, but will also draw in a whole new group of doom and stoner fans to Middian with their slightly different approach.
