Croton & Foxtail Grass
- The woolly croton plants stands upright ranging from 1 to 3 feet tall. While the plant and its seeds serve as food for wildlife, the plant can be toxic to cattle. The woolly name is derived from its hairy stems. Also known as hogwort, the plant is a member of the Euphorbiaceae or spurge family of plants.
- Spray woolly croton with 2,4-D amine in the spring before the plant reaches heights of 12 inches. The plant is readily controlled with chemicals if the application occurs at the proper time.
- Foxtail is a warm season annual grass found in disturbed soil, such as road ditches and overgrazed pastures. The plants can reach heights of up to 3 feet with individual leaves of up to 15 inches. The blooms of the grass are small individual flowers that form bristles on a flower head. This gives the plant its foxtail name.
- Pre-emergent herbicides prevent the foxtail seeds from germinating and emerging from the ground. Other control options include glyphosate type herbicide that kills most plants it contacts. Repeated cultivation throughout the summer also controls the grass. Work the ground each time the new foxtail plants emerge. The key to any annual weed control program is to prevent new seed production. Weed seeds lie dormant in the ground, so some residual control in subsequent years is necessary.
