    • 1). Turn off the main power to your HVAC unit at the breaker box.

    • 2). Remove the thermostat cover from the base. Some covers attach with screws, while others snap in place.

    • 3). Label the wires that come from inside your wall to your thermostat. Each wire connects to one of five terminals labeled "RH, R, VR or 4," "RC or VC," "G or F," "Y, C or M" and "W or H." Designate which terminal each wire plugged into.

    • 4). Loosen the screws holding the wires in their respective terminals, then gently pull the wires loose from the old thermostat. Unscrew the thermostat base still attached to the wall. Press the "Release" tab on the bottom of your thermostat to release the thermostat from the wall plate.

    • 5). Hold the wall plate up against the wall in the area where you will install a new Hunter digital thermostat. Mark the locations where you will insert plastic anchors. You can use anchors still in the wall from your previous thermostat if they line up correctly.

    • 6). Drill a pilot hole in the location where you will insert plastic anchors into the wall. Use a 3/16-inch drill bit to create the pilot hole, then gently tap the plastic anchors into the wall with a hammer.

    • 7). Position your wall plate on the wall, pulling the HVAC wires through the designated area of your wall plate. Insert screws through the appropriate location on the wall plate and into the sheet rock anchors you just installed to secure your wall plate.

    • 8). Connect your HVAC wires to the terminal according to the labels you made. For example, the "RH, R, VR or 4" wire will go in the terminal marked "RH, R, VR or 4." Insert the wires into the appropriate terminal and tighten the screw on the wiring terminal to secure the wire.

    • 9). Snap your new Hunter digital thermostat into place by inserting the tabs on the thermostat into the slots at the top of the wall plate. Then simply push the bottom of the thermostat into place to mount it to the wall.
