How to Cover Up Roots Fast

    • 1). Prepare the planting destination fully before exposing the plant roots. Excavate the destination planting hole, till the soil bed or prepare the container or pot.

    • 2). Leave the replacement soil right next to the planting site along with a supply of water sufficient to drench the root mass and immediately surrounding soil. Add any desired soil amendments or fertilizers to the planting hole or soil supply before touching the plant to be moved.

    • 3). Excavate the plant root ball just minutes before you will be moving into the new soil, if at all possible. Swaddle exposed root balls with wet burlap if they will be out of moist soil for more than a few minutes time, such as when you need to move a favored plant to your new home across town. Keep sod rolls evenly moist and out of the sun.

    • 4). Move the plant root mass immediately into the new location and push the prepared adjacent soil in and around the root mass coming halfway up the root ball. Water in well and fill in the remaining soil to surround the root ball. Tamp the soil in gently but firmly with your palm or heel and water again to moisten and settle the soil around the roots.
