The Microsoft Office slideshow application PowerPoint allows users to convey considerable amounts of information to a wide array of audiences. Presenters can use the application to explain complex projects not well suited to static displays, and the electronic nature of PowerPoint allows users to update information at the last minute. In addition, users may enjoy a number of other advantages when using PowerPoint presentation software. - PowerPoint allows presenters to convey a considerable amount of information in a single presentation. Instead of static numbers and charts, though, PowerPoint users can add animations, moving graphs and a host of other functions that draw attention to important points or illustrate challenging concepts. The PowerPoint training organization Skill Sheets notes that users can build an argument by displaying one sentence at a time, and some users can customize PowerPoint presentations minutes before delivering the information. Automated slide progression during presentation of the PowerPoint slide show, according to Skill Sheets, also allows users to monitor the audience for nonverbal feedback like yawning or confused looks. After noticing audience feedback, presenters can adapt the presentation to elaborate on certain topics or provide additional supporting information.
- The electronic nature of PowerPoint makes distribution simple, especially when compared to more traditional presentation like overhead transparencies and printed handouts. Many organizations post PowerPoint presentations on websites for download, and free PowerPoint viewer applications built into many popular browsers allow Web users to view the presentation from almost anywhere. In addition, the self-improvement website Self Growth says that users can burn PowerPoint presentations to a DVD for display on a television, and some users can use DVD or CD media to distribute very large PowerPoint files. Skill Sheets also notes that presenters can distribute PowerPoint files ahead of a scheduled presentation to familiarize the audience with key concepts and critical information.
- Although many users distribute PowerPoint files with the familiar PPT extension, PowerPoint also allows content creators to save the files in a PPS, or PowerPoint Show, format. When a recipient opens a PPS file, PowerPoint launches directly into slideshow mode and immediately begins delivering content. This functionality prevents users from viewing and modifying content prior to experiencing the slideshow, and the PowerPoint Show format is ideal for kiosks and other venues that benefit from automated delivery.
- Anand Natrajan, who holds a PhD in Computer Science and serves as the vice president of engineering at LucidMedia Inc., observes on his website that PowerPoint presentations have largely replaced overhead projector transparencies. The transition to PowerPoint allows users to use an electronic display instead of materials printed on plastic transparencies, and electronic media keeps the transparencies out of landfills.
