How to Replace the Passenger Side Half Shaft on a 94 Honda Civic
- 1). Raise and support the right front wheel using a floor jack and a jack stand. Remove the wheel using a lug wrench.
- 2). Remove the axle nut using a breaker bar and socket. Remove the two brake caliper bolts using a 14 mm wrench. Remove the lower strut bolt using a 17 mm wrench to hold the nut while turning the bolt with a socket and ratchet. Remove the lower ball joint lock nut using a 17 mm wrench. Remove the 10 mm brake hose bracket bolt on the steering knuckle using a 10 mm socket and ratchet.
- 3). Pry the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle by prying down on the lower control arm while lifting the steering knuckle up until the ball joint slips from the knuckle. Pull out on the steering knuckle until the axle slips from the hub assembly.
- 4). Remove the three 15 mm bolts that attach the output shaft to the engine block and slide the axle out along with the output shaft. Catch any spilled fluid with the drain pan.
- 5). Knock the axle off the output shaft with a hammer. Tap the new axle onto the shaft with a hammer and reinstall it into the transmission. Install and tighten the 15 mm bolts that attach the output shaft to the engine block. Pull out on the steering knuckle and slip the axle into the hub assembly.
- 6). Lift up on the steering knuckle and pry down on the lower control arm. Slip the lower ball joint into the steering knuckle. Reinstall the ball joint nut and lower strut mount bolt. Tighten the bolt and nut very tight. Reinstall brake hose bracket bolt. Tighten the axle nut to 165 foot-lb. using a torque wrench.
- 7). Reinstall the brake caliper and tighten the two bolts securely. Install the wheel and torque the lug nuts to 76 foot-lb. using a torque wrench. Test drive to verify the repair solved the problem.
