Asthma is a chronic condition which mainly affects the respiratory system.
This age old condition have plagued and baffled humanity for the longest time and it is only now, with the help of advanced medical science and new technologies that we are slowly beginning to unravel its inner workings.
In the United States, asthma affects millions of individual's men, women, children and adults alike.
This condition accounts for a high percentage in the total hospital admittance being made each year.
There are also many factors that surround the condition and as of the moment science has only been able to break down the factors into specific categories, namely; allergies, genetics, early infections, underdevelopment of respiratory organs.
In babies, the determination of asthma can prove to be a difficult undertaking for health care providers.
In actuality, doctors do not really diagnose asthma in infants not unless the symptoms are really visible (which in some cases they don't).
As said above, research has only been able to generally categorize the different factors which can cause asthma in babies.
To give you a clearer idea as to how big each of these factors play here are some info on each of them: Allergies: Allergies have been highly implicated in causing asthma in infants.
So far research has shown that constant exposure to certain allergens such as smoke, dust, animal dander, pollen, spores and certain household chemicals can trigger as well as cause asthma.
But what's unknown is the exact mechanisms involved in bringing about the condition.
Genetics: Research has also shown that genetics play a certain role in causing asthma as some infants share this condition with one of their immediate relatives (father, mother, siblings).
Same as with allergies, studies have not been able to pinpoint the exact mechanisms involved but have concluded that there may be multiple genetic factors in play.
Early Infections: While most respiratory infections are not enough to cause asthma, there are also certain exceptions.
The respiratory syncytial virus for example has been known to cause asthma and pneumonia in infants.
Even when properly treated during the time, this virus has also been known to cause asthma in later years of those it has infected.
Underdevelopment of respiratory organs: This factor mostly affects (but are not limited to) infants who have been born prematurely.
There may be other causes not listed or mentioned here.
But so far these are some of the major categories that have been brought about by studies and research.
If you want to know more about the asthma causes in babies, try to look up medical sites, or ask your doctor, both will be able to provide you with the relevant information that you need.
