How to Grow High Yield Tomatoes
- 1). Prepare a seedbed outdoors by turning over the soil and adding compost to it. Sow the seeds in spring, topping them off with 2 inches of compost. Start the seeds indoors by sowing them in a seed tray filled with 3 to 4 inches of compost. For both indoor and outdoor growing, water well after sowing and do not allow the compost to dry out.
- 2). Thin out the seedlings when they appear outdoors, so that there is 2 feet between each plant. Indoors, take the young plants from the seed tray and plant them in 4-inch pots. When they are 4 to 6 inches tall, plant them outside in a hole large enough for the roots, and fill in with compost.
- 3). Water the plants when the surface of the soil is dry to the touch.
- 4). Support the growing tomato plants by tying them to garden stakes.
- 5). Apply fertilizer regularly when the first blossoms appear and form tiny tomatoes to promote high yield. Garden stores stock specialized tomato fertilizers, high in potash; be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- 6). Pinch out the growing top of the plant, once the tomato plant has set four to six clusters of blooms, so that it concentrates on ripening the fruit and increasing yield.
