How to Make Your Own Baby Carrier That Wraps Across the Back
- 1). Purchase cotton, jersey or any preferred fabric for your wrap. Buy 5 yards of fabric for a small carrier, 5.5 yards of fabric for a medium carrier or 6 yards of fabric for a large carrier. If you have leftover fabric around the house from previous projects, feel free to use that.
- 2). Wash and press the fabric. Preshrink fabric through washing and drying before sewing to ensure that the hem will remain straight and your sewn fabric will not bunch after the first time you wash it.
- 3). Cut your fabric into one or two long panels. The width should be approximately 21 to 25 inches across, but feel free to cut fabric to your preference on width. Most fabric is wide enough to accommodate two panels. If you plan on stitching the sides of the garment, add 1/2 inch on all sides for hemming. Jersey material, with a significant amount of stretch, doesn't need to be stitched; instead, the edges will roll, which doesn't require you to hem the fabric.
- 4). If you're using fabric without stretch, hem all sides with a 1/2-inch seam using a running stitch on a sewing machine or by hand.
