How to Tile Under Toilet

    • 1). Turn off the water to the toilet at the shutoff valve behind it. Disconnect the water line using your wrench. Remove the mounting bolts at the base of the stool, and lift out the toilet, leaving the floor drain exposed.

    • 2). Divide the floor area into four squares, using a chalk snap line to lay down two lines that intersect in the middle. Install your tiles in a grid pattern starting at the intersection, spreading down thin set mortar with a notched trowel and pressing the tiles into place with spacers between them.

    • 3). Continue laying tiles along the lines, building out toward the walls. Install all the tiles except those around the toilet drain, leaving a square perimeter of un-tiled area there. Let the tiles set overnight.

    • 4). Set tiles over the drain (without mortar) to assess where they will line up around it. Space the tiles in the same manner as the rest of them are spaced. Trace the curve of the drain onto the surface of the tiles with your pencil, making the curve about 1/4 inches wider than the edge of the drain. (The drain position should be visible through the spaces between the tiles.)

    • 5). Pick up the tiles. Chip away chunks of the tile with tile nippers, working from the edge and gradually chipping at each tile until you've shaped it along the marked curve.

    • 6). Mortar the tiles around the drain, leaving 1/4 inch of space. Let them set overnight. Remove the spacers.

    • 7). Spread grout over all the tiles with a rubber grout trowel, forcing it onto the spaces and scraping it off the surface. Use a damp sponge to wipe up excess grout. Let the grout set for 48 hours before re-installing the toilet.
