How to Repair the Rack & Pinion on a Chevy Van
- 1). Check the steering system on the Chevy van before repairing the rack and pinion. Check whether you simply need to rotate or balance the tires, align the front end or replace the steering fluid.
- 2). Remove the battery cable and drain the steering fluid from the van. Raise the front of the van with a jack and remove the wheels. Secure the van using jack stands.
- 3). Unhook the stabilizer shaft and the power-steering pressure lines. Unscrew the clamp on the intermediate shaft. Disconnect the tie rod.
- 4). Remove the mounting bolts, nuts and washers and the rack and pinion from the assembly kit. Assemble the new rack and pinion. Install the rack into the steering wheel's inner spindle. Attach the pinion to the steering shaft, and let it rest on the rivets of the rack.
- 5). Connect the bolts and washers. Reattach the stabilizer shaft, rod ends and wheels. Reassemble the hoses.
- 6). Lower the van off the jack stands using the jack. Refill the steering fluid, and replace the battery. Idle the van's engine to allow the fluid to level out. Check for leaks before driving the Chevy van.
