How to Make a Craft Display Box
- 1). Place the items for your display on a piece of pattern paper and trace the item's outline. This will be the initial rough placement for your items within the case.
- 2). Measure the width and length of the paper pattern where your items were traced. Add approximately 2 inches to the width and length. For example, if the item's placement area is 18 inches wide by 21 inches in length, make the back wall of your display case 20 inches wide by 23 inches in length.
- 3). Measure the depth of your display case for your top, bottom and side panels. Keep in mind the specifications taken for your back wall as well as the amount of items you will be displaying. For example, a 12 inch depth frame will give you more room to display items than a 4 inch depth frame.
- 4). Sketch your display box using your measurements. Include in your sketch the type of wood such as pine, fir, spruce or redwood, the wood's thickness such as a 1x4, as well as a lucite, acrylic or plexiglass covering. Include special hardware in your sketch such as hinges or magnetic clasp for closing your case.
- 5). Select and cut the wood in your dimensions. You can opt to have your local home or lumber store cut your wood as well as plexiglass dimensions. Make sure the corners are mitered in order to develop the frame. If you are adding a special wood carving, it is best to apply novelty features prior to building your box.
- 6). Build your display box. Add wood glue to each corner and secure with clamps. Let dry. Hammer or drill nails to secure the box's frame. Add side hinges for your plexi glass door. You can opt to add a magnetic clasp to the frame and glass to close the display case. Depending on your wood type, you can opt to add a wood conditioner with a clean soft cloth and add a wood stain.
- 7). Line the back wall of your display case with a background image for your box's theme or use fabric such as felt. You can opt to add a cork board backing to tack on items or use the natural wood as your background and display your special crafts.
