How to Remove an Alternator Pulley on a 1993 Volvo

    • 1). Remove the alternator belt and then disconnect all wiring harnesses to the alternator and remove the alternator from the vehicle.

    • 2). Set the alternator on a workbench or flat surface. Remove the nut that is on the face of the alternator pulley. Hold the pulley or shaft with a set of pliers or channel locks to spin the nut off.

    • 3). Place the screw spline tip of the three-pronged puller in the center of the alternator shaft. Wrap the three prongs around the pulley and tighten by hand until snug around pulley.

    • 4). Turn the puller clockwise, using a ratchet and socket at the head of the spline end. As the puller tightens and retracts toward you, it will pull the pulley off of the shaft. If the pulley is rusted or stuck on the shaft, apply penetrating oil to the shaft with a rag. Do not spray penetrating oil, as you will risk spraying the alternator and destroying the electrical connections within.
