Wall hangings are an attractive way to enhance your décor. You can save money by crafting some yourself. You can save a significant amount of money when you make your own wall art versus purchasing expensive hangings from a gallery or store. As a bonus, you'll have a hanging that is unique and made especially to match your décor. - A fishnet adds a nice touch to tropical-themed décor. Buy a fishnet at an import store---a purely decorative one is fine. Cut the fishnet to the size you want your wall hanging to be. Arrange shells, starfish and other nautical items on the net. When you are satisfied with your arrangement, attach them to the net. You can drill a small hole in many items, but may need to simply tie other items. Use fishing line to invisibly attach them to the net.
- Garlands don't need only to be for special occasions. Make a series of garlands and hang several of them vertically from a decorative curtain rod. You can make garlands that are appropriate for a wall hanging out of many items. Try crocheting a string of flowers, cutting designs out of paper and gluing them to end to end or attaching colorful felt circles to a sturdy cord. Make all of your garlands the same size so that they form a rectangle when hung together from the rod.
- Burlap can form the base for an inexpensive and durable wall hanging. Purchase undyed burlap and cut it 2 inches wider and 4 inches longer than the size you want your wall hanging to be. Use chalk to outline a design, leaving 3 inches of plain burlap at the top and 1 inch the sides. When you are satisfied with your design, paint it using acrylic paints. After the burlap has dried, hem the edges and sew the top in a channel to hold a wooden dowel, from which the burlap art can be hung.
- Easily match the dominant colors in your décor by making a wall hanging out of woven ribbons. Ribbons come in such a wide variety of colors that it will be easy to find the right ones for your wall. Select three or four different colors as well as a few different widths. Lay the ribbons out vertically on a sheet of poster board in a pleasing pattern. Tape the tops of the ribbons to the board. Weave ribbon horizontally through the vertical ribbons until you reach the bottom of the vertical ribbons. Carefully detach from the poster board and sew around the edges to secure. Trim the edges and you've got a lovely woven wall hanging that was quick to create.
