How to Lay Plush Carpeting
- 1). Vacuum the old carpeting to remove as much dust as possible before beginning to remove it. Remove old carpeting by pulling it loose from the tack strips. If you are working with a large amount of carpet, it is easier to cut it into strips to remove. Use a straight edge and a sharp utility knife to cut the carpeting, then roll up each strip and discard. Remove any transition strips at doorways or other openings.
- 2). Pull up old padding with and discard; it is not a good idea to lay new carpet over used padding. Remove the old tack strips with a pry bar. Vacuum the floor thoroughly. Install new tack strips along the perimeters of the room with the pins facing toward the wall. Nail the tack strips at 12-inch intervals into the subfloor, using a hammer.
- 3). Roll out the carpet padding, butting the seams and securing with duct tape. Roll the carpet padding over the tack strip and staple the padding to the subfloor along the inner edge of the tack strip. Trim the padding along the inner edge of the tack strip with a sharp utility knife.
- 4). Cut the new carpet six inches wider on all sides than the measurements of the room, using a straight edge and sharp utility knife. Place the carpet face down and cut from the backside. Lay the trimmed carpet face up with the excess running up onto the walls.
- 5). Stretch the carpet over the tack strip to engage the pins in the strip, using a knee kicker. After stretching all of the carpet over the tack strip, trim the carpet even with the wall edges with a utility knife. Use a carpet stretcher to remove any wrinkles out of the carpet; you may have to pull the carpet loose from the tack strips and reattach to make it smooth.
- 6). Tuck the edges of the carpet into the opening between the wall and the tack strip, using a stair tool, and trim away any excess. Install new transition strips in doorways or other areas where the new carpeting meets other flooring.
