How to Reglaze a Window Pane

    • 1). Heat the existing glazing putty around the edges of the pane with a heat gun on its highest setting. This softens the putty slightly, making it easier to remove.

    • 2). Scrape the putty from the corners of the pane with a sharp paint scraper or wood chisel. Do not scratch or apply pressure to the glass pane.

    • 3). Tighten the points against the glass. Points are the small metal triangle fasteners that hold the glass in place. Set a flat head screwdriver on top of a point with its blade horizontal to the pane and the tip. Tap the screwdriver head with a small hammer to drive the point into the frame snugly. Take your time to prevent damage to the glass.

    • 4). Cut the tip of the latex glazing compound tube to create a ¼-inch opening. Run a thin bead of the compound in the angle between the glass and the wood frame. Smooth the compound with a dampened finger. Allow this bead to set for at least an hour.

    • 5). Widen the opening in the tube slightly for a thicker bead. Apply a bead of compound around the frame on top of the first application. Smooth the compound with a dampened finger to create a smooth curved line around the pane. Scrape excess compound from the glass with a razor blade scraper before it hardens.

    • 6). Apply a bead of silicone caulk around the frame on the opposite side of the pane to complete the seal.

    • 7). Repeat the glazing process with all of the panes within the window (unless they have been reglazed within the last few years) to maintain the seal on the entire window.
