How to Replace the Serpentine Belt on a 1997 Buick
- 1). Open the hood to access the engine compartment. Examine how the belt is situated along the pulley.
- 2). Push the tensioner pulley down with a socket wrench. The tensioner pulley is located under the alternator pulley toward the middle of the motor. Release the socket wrench once the belt is off the pulley.
- 3). Pull the old belt off by hand. Pull the belt off each pulley to ensure it comes off smoothly.
- 4). Place the new belt on the pulleys. Use the pulley diagram next to the hood latch to note the correct pattern. Place the belt around the tensioner pulley last.
- 5). Push the tensioner pulley down with the socket wrench. Place the belt onto the tensioner pulley. Release the socket wrench once the belt is on the pulley.
- 6). Start the car to ensure the belt travels along the pulley smoothly. Close the hood.
