How to Replace a Cedar Shake Shingle

    • 1). Bend the two lower corners of the metal shim so they point down at a 45 degree angle. Slide the shim under the damaged shingle with the pointed corners lifting the bottom of the shim off the roof.

    • 2). Push the slater's ripper up under the damaged shingle while holding the handle. Pry the shingle up and away from the roof until you can access the nails holding it down.

    • 3). Cut through the nails holding the shingle down using the blade at the end of the slater's ripper. The shingle will come away from the roof easily when the nails are removed.

    • 4). Slide the new shake shingle into the gap where the damaged one used to be, leaving ½ inch of the new shingle sticking out past the bottom edge of the existing ones.

    • 5). Drive as many nails into the uppermost exposed edge of the shake as you removed from the old one. The nails should be angled in at 45 degree to the shingle.

    • 6). Place a small wooden block against the lower edge of the shingle and tap it with a hammer to slide it up. Keep tapping until the nail heads are covered by the shingle above.
