    Growing Zones

    • Pampas grass thrives well in USDA zones 5 to 10, according to Norman Winter in his book "Tough As Nails Flowers for the South." The adaptability of pampas grass depends on the cultivar. The Floridata website recommends choosing hardier varieties for use in zone 7 and northward. Some cold-hardy cultivars listed by the University of Georgia Extension include Andes Silver, Patagonia and Pumila for zone 6 and Bertini for zone 7.

    Description

    • Pampas grass has a mature height of up to 12 feet with a 6-foot spread. The grass is grown for its 1-foot-long, white plumes that grow above the foliage during midsummer. Some cultivars have light pink plumes. The narrow foliage is ½ to ¾-inch-wide and grows in a clump from the base. Leaves turn brown at the first frost and the dried plumes persist on plants for extended periods. The plumes on the male plants are generally longer than those on female plants.

    Cultural Requirements

    • Plant pampas grass in an area of full sun for best growth, though the plant also tolerates light shade. The grass thrives well in a variety of soil types, including dry, sandy and poorly fertile to heavy or clay. In severely adverse conditions such as flooded or wet sites, the growth is less vigorous. For optimal growth, plant in a fertile and well-drained loam. Pampas grass is highly drought-tolerant.

    Planting Suggestions

    • The recommended time for planting the grass is during spring. Select healthy transplants and make sure the planting site is free of weeds prior to planting. Dig the planting hole at the same depth as the plant container. Avoid planting too deeply as this will affect plant health. To create a screen using pampas grass, space the plants about 8 feet apart. Water new plants regularly until established.
