How to Sharpen a Hatchet With a Sharpening Stone

    • 1). Place your hatchet on a firm work surface, and position yourself so that you are holding the handle with one hand and the blade is hanging over the edge of the work surface.

    • 2). Work the coarse side of the sharpening stone across the edge of the hatchet blade using a circular motion, moving up and down the height of the blade with the stone. Apply medium pressure to the stone, and add water if you like to keep dust from forming on the blade. Flip the blade over and repeat on the other side.

    • 3). Carefully test the sharpness of the blade with your finger or a piece of paper. Flip over the sharpening stone and use the fine side in the same manner you did the coarse side, using a circular motion and medium pressure. Make sure to keep the convex shape of the blade by not working one area or another too much. Continue until the blade is sharp enough for your satisfaction.
