Following high school and college dating doesn't necessarily occur organically. And rarely do you see males approaching women in public places anymore. So people are seeking alternative means.

Sites like Match.com and eHarmony lean toward older crowds of singles who are looking for marriage. While sites like OKCupid and Plenty of Fish are free sites for the younger crowd with less hope of finding long-term commitments.
So the question at hand is whether online dating services or matchmakers are the better options. I would have to go with matchmakers. Even though computers are replacing people left and right, they cannot even come close to personal opinions. Many online sites offer questionnaires that supposedly find people a match. But these tests are often subjective and tell little or nothing about true interests and compatibility. This is why matchmakers are still steadily employed.
A Las Vegas matchmaker is like asking a close friend or relative to set you up with someone. Their job is to personally interview and analyze your lifestyle. They then repeat the same process for your prospective dates. I mean there has to be a reason the Millionaire Matchmaker show has had such strong ratings right? The real question should be why do we need so many services all of the sudden. There was a day when everyone met through a friend, sister or parent.
