Indoor Care of Caladiums
- 1). Plant caladiums in a medium-sized container filled with a growing medium made of two parts potting soil and one part peat moss for proper drainage. Keep the plant in a location that receives bright, indirect sunlight such as a north- or east-facing window.
- 2). Maintain a consistent daily temperature of 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit and a nightly temperature of 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal growth. Keep the plant away from cold drafts as drafts can cause significant foliage damage.
- 3). Place the container on a shallow tray filled with pebbles and water to increase relative humidity. Water only when the surface of the soil is dry to the touch, about once every four to six days. Never allow the soil to dry out completely.
- 4). Feed indoor caladiums once every other week during spring, summer and fall using a balanced 20-20-20 NPK fertilizer to provide plenty of nutrients for foliage development. Follow the fertilizer manufacturer's directions for application to achieve the best results.
- 5). Induce a dormant period during late fall when foliage begins to wilt and turn yellow. Transfer the plants to a location that receives partial shade and has constant temperatures of 55 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Reduce watering to once every two to four weeks. Move the plant back to its original location when new foliage begins to form in spring.
