Wood vs. Metal Fence
- There are a variety of choices in wooden and metal fencing. Wooden fences include cedar, pine and bamboo. Metal includes low-cost aluminum and the pricier wrought iron and copper.
- When installed in a dry, warm climate, wooden fencing is low-maintenance and easy to maintain. In a climate with more moisture, wood requires annual maintenance. Aluminum chain-link fencing is virtually maintenance-free, but wrought iron requires annual painting.
- The appearance of wooden fences can be altered with stains. Chain-link fencing cannot have its appearance changed, but metals such as wrought iron also can be painted.
- Wooden-fence problems usually can be fixed with household tools. Problems with metal fencing usually are more complicated and require professional help.
- Wooden fences provide a feeling of safety and security, enclosing an area in a ring of privacy. Metal fences such as wrought iron and chain link provide security with a sense of openness but do not add privacy.
- Metal fencing provides commercial properties with a reduced chance of graffiti problems. Wooden fencing is more of a risk.
