Coconut Oil For Hair

Coconut oil is fantastic for so many things. Giving yourself a treatment with it will produce the hair you see on the shampoo commercials; you know the ones where the model has long flowing hair, full, luxurious and shiny with no frizz or split ends. Yeah really, you can have hair like that too.
Why does coconut oil work? It is full of protein. Your hair craves protein. Every time you shampoo your hair you are stripping it of vital nutrients.
Most of the shampoo on the market is full of sulfates. Sulfates are cleaning agents; think detergent. Sulfates can dry you hair and scalp by removing the natural oils needed to protect them. Sulfates can cause skin irritation, clog pores and worsen eczema, psoriasis and dandruff. When you strip away the natural oils required to give you the silky, full, frizz free hair you are left with dull, lifeless frizzy hair with split ends. Sounds gross don't it?
Search the isle where you buy your shampoo for one that is free of sulfates. Check the ingredient list on your shampoo bottle and avoid words like, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, (SLS) Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES), Ammonia (Laureth) Sulphate (ALS) TEA Lauryeth Sulfate and Sodium Myreth Sulphate. The label may list any one of these sulfates as €natural€. Don't be fooled. None of these are €natural€! The word natural on a product is a marketing ploy to get you to buy it because these days €natural€ sells. If your hair is chemically damaged stay away from sulfates at ALL cost! Your hair needs to be repaired and shampoos with sulfates will NOT repair your hair.

Coconut Oil to the rescue! It can give your hair the shine and healthy look we seek. Depending on the damage of your hair will determine how often you give yourself this treatment. Very damaged hair can benefit from a treatment twice a week. If your hair is already healthy a treatment once a month or once every 2 months will be sufficient.

How do you use the oil for hair?
1. Purchase VIRGIN coconut oil. Don't use oil that is highly processed. Processed oil has less protein than the virgin kind.
2. Make sure you have time to do this properly. Short hair will take abouthour for a treatment of coconut oil. Long hair will require at least an hour - totally dependent on the length of your hair.
3. Start by applying the oil to your roots and scalp. You can melt the oil in the microwave for a few seconds. Make sure your oil is not too hot as you could burn your scalp. Apply it with a cotton ball to your roots and scalp. You don't need a lot of it to cover your head. If you use too much your hair will become sticky. Pretend the oil is as expensive and use sparingly. Separate your hair and do the next sections until you have covered your entire roots and scalp.
4. Give yourself a scalp massage for about 5 minutes. This brings blood to the area and stimulates hair growth and it feels really good. If your partner is willing allow them to give you a scalp massage.
5. Now rub the oil on your hands and apply to the middle and ends of your hair. Work your fingers through your hair to spread the oil as evenly as possible. If your hair is short you can skip this step as you will have worked the oil through to the ends of your hair as you massaged your scalp.
6. If your hair is long gather your hair into a hair clamp.
7. Cover your head with a plastic shower cap or a plastic bag. Leave your head wrapped for at least 2 hours. The longer you leave your hair covered in plastic the better the treatment. You can leave your hair like this over night. Cover your pillow with a towel to protect your bedding.
8. Wash your hair and style as usual. Depending on how much oil you used you may have to shampoo your hair twice.

Don't forget to feed your body as well with nutritious foods. Your hair and skin reflect what you eat. Eat coconut oil as well as use it externally. You really are what you eat!
