How to Plant Flowers & Asparagus Together
- 1). Prepare your garden area. Using a garden fork or tiller, dig up the ground to a depth of 15 inches. Whichever method you use, make sure you break up the hard clumps and remove any rocks you may find. Asparagus is not fussy about the soil, but it does better in soil that drains well.
- 2). Add 2 to 4 inches of compost to the garden area. Dig or till this into the ground, mixing well.
- 3). With a rake, smooth and level the ground.
- 4). Determine where you want your asparagus. If you are going to cut the spears for eating, you might want to plant the asparagus close to one of the outside edges of your garden so that you can avoid walking through your flower garden and packing the ground down. On the other hand, perhaps you want to fill the entire garden site with asparagus.
- 5). With a trowel or shovel, dig a trench that is 4 inches wide and 6 to 10 inches deep for the asparagus plants. They need to be planted 18 inches apart. If you plan to have more than one row, the rows need to be 4 feet apart. Check the roots of your plants before you put them into the ground. If they are a tangled mass, tease them free so they can grow deeper into the ground.
- 6). Cover the root ball with 3 inches of soil and firm the soil down. Do not cover them all at once. As the plants grow, continue to pull more soil around them. By the end of the growing season, the soil will be even.
- 7). With a trowel, dig holes between the rows of asparagus plants. Follow planting directions on the label for the type of flowers you are planting. The holes need only be as deep as the root ball. Pop out an annual plant from the container and place in the ground. Cover with soil until the root ball and soil are even.
- 8). Water the area thoroughly. Add mulch around the flowers to help retain moisture. Mulch the asparagus plants in the second growing season.
