How to Make a Herringbone Stitch
- 1). Cut an 18-inch length of embroidery floss. Separate the strands and use three or four to stitch the herringbone. Thread the needle and place a small knot in the end of the floss.
- 2). Place the fabric into the embroidery hoop and tighten the hoop enough to make the fabric moderately taut.
- 3). Insert the needle up from the backside of the fabric at the left edge of where you wish to begin the herringbone stitch. Work the herringbone stitch from left to right.
- 4). Make a diagonal stitch to the upper right, making the stitch about 1/2-inch long. Insert the needle back down through the fabric at this point.
- 5). Insert the needle back up again about 1/8-inch straight over to the left and pull the floss all the way through.
- 6). Make a diagonal stitch to the lower right, making the stitch the same length as the previous diagonal stitches. Pull the floss all the way through. Make all the diagonal stitches 1/2-inch long.
- 7). Insert the needle back up again about 1/8-inch straight over to the left and pull the floss through.
- 8). Repeat the process of taking a diagonal stitch, alternating between going to the upper right and the lower right each time. After each diagonal stitch, take a smaller stitch straight over to the left.
- 9). Continue making the herringbone stitch until you fill the entire area you wish to fill. Finish your stitching with the needle on the underside of the fabric. Make a small knot and clip the floss off with the scissors.
