How to Tighten Loose Kitchen Cabinets
- 1). Locate the existing screws holding the cabinet in place, and tighten them using a screwdriver. If this does not cure the problem, then the cabinet needs additional screws to hold it into place. Concentrate on the area that shows the most sign of movement.
- 2). Locate the studs in the wall that support the cabinet using a stud finder. Drill a small pilot hole into the stud and install a screw. Repeat this process in other areas of the cabinet where additional screws are needed. The screws must go into a stud so that the screws will stay in place.
- 3). Check the bottom of the cabinet to make sure it is level and supported at each corner. Place a few wood shims in any unsupported spots.
- 1). Tighten the screws holding the doors into place. If they will not tighten, then the screw holes are worn out and need to be re-drilled.
- 2). Remove the doors by removing the screws that support the door. Use a drill bit to drill out the old holes that the screws were in. Choose a drill bit larger than the screw. Drill down into the old holes. Do not completely penetrate the door; only drill about halfway through the door.
- 3). Squirt strong wood glue into the new screw hole. Insert a wood dowel into the hole and cut off any extra so that the dowel is flush with the door.Wait for the wood glue to dry. Drill a pilot hole about half the size of the original screw into the wood dowel. Reinstall the doors using the original screws.
