How to Clear Water in a Swimming Pool

    • 1). Circulate the pool system at all times while the pool remains cloudy. Proper circulation sends water to the pool's filter where it runs through a filter media and becomes clean. Given enough time to circulate, cloudy water becomes clear.

    • 2). Raise the chlorine level in the pool to eliminate free-floating particles. A chlorine shock treatment temporarily boosts the pool's chlorine levels which neutralizes floating particles, dropping them to the pool floor for vacuuming. A normal shock treatment consists of 1 lb. of shock per 10,000 gallons of water treated.

    • 3). Assemble the pool's vacuum. Vacuum all underwater surfaces of the pool to remove any settled debris. Settled debris can become stirred up during circulation and may cloud the pool.

    • 4). Clean the swimming pool's filter cartridge or sand. Spray the pleats of physical cartridges with water to clean them. For sand filters, change the filter setting to "Backwash" and run the filter for two minutes. Backwashing reverses the water flow in the filter, cleaning the sand. Clean filter media ensures the filter continues to clean the cloudy water properly.
