How to Change the Wick on a Sears Heater
- 1). Run your hand over the Sears heater, making sure that it feels cool to the touch. Take off any batteries used by the heater, and remove the fuel tank, the levers and the knobs. Insert the end of your screwdriver underneath each knob and lever. Apply enough pressure that the pieces pop out of place. Unscrew the screws holding the grill in place and take the catalytic converter out of the heater. The catalytic converter is a small spherical piece with narrow ends located behind the grill.
- 2). Unscrew the screws around the base of the Sears heater, removing any screws that hold the upper portion of the heater to the base. Pull the upper part towards you at an angle and slide it away from the base. Set the heater top to one side.
- 3). Run a marker around the top of the old wick, marking where the wick touches the top of its holder inside the heater. Fold the old wick in half and gently pull it out from the heater. Lay the new wick down and look for a black line. The line on the new wick should match the line you made on the old wick. If your new wick is longer or shorter, then adjust the wick so that the top sticks out as much as the old wick.
- 4). Twist the wick in half and slide the wick into the holder inside the Sears heater. Push the wick down until the black line on the wick sits even with the top of the holder. Unfold the wick and press it flat against the sharp teeth on the holder which keep the wick from sliding around.
- 5). Replace the knobs, levers and other pieces you removed from the Sears heater. Turn the wick adjustment knob, making sure that the wick slowly raises and lowers as you move the knob. The knob lets you adjust the height of the wick when needed.
